This project is a design of Aviary No.01: an ecological research facility. It is a renovation project of the Sunsphere, which was built for the 1982 World’s Fair in Knoxville, Tennessee. The unique facility provides researchers the opportunity to investigate the surrounding peri-urban ecosystems. This project challenges primary notions of architectural form as it blurs the contextual reliance on a plane (ground plan) on which everything is commonly placed. Rather than the understanding of plan as the base location for the building design, this project looks at the larger concept of field.
